Approach to Math

The Math Collective uses a constructivist, CGI-aligned approach to instruction that harnesses mathematicians’ experiences and interests to authentically engage them in learning. The teacher takes on the role of facilitator, creating and adapting learning experiences to provide all students with points of entry. Mathematicians are encouraged to solve problems using strategies that make sense to them as individuals. Through partner work and group shares, the class engages in discussions to build deeper understandings of math concepts and strategies collectively. This work promotes critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and perseverance, all of which are valuable life skills.
