Routines

Number sense routines are short tasks that engage learners in meaningful mathematics experiences, while building positive relationships with mathematics. These routines create opportunities for all students to develop mathematical reasoning and sense-making skills while building number sense, fluency, and conceptual understanding. They follow a consistent structure and invite students to share their ideas, listen to others, make connections, and see mathematics in everyday contexts.

New to number sense routines? Select one of the images below and ask students, “What do you notice? What do you wonder?” Then invite students to share their ideas.
